Renter Tip: Portray yourself as living in that apartment at the showing

dsc_0465Every Realtor or renting professional knows it’s a good indicator from someone looking at a rental space is when they start to envision their furniture in the room.

Another good indicator to gauge interest is when they start to call the rooms by name, like “office” or “bedroom” or makes some comment as to how they would set up the apartment should they end up living there. This visualization process shows the landlord that you already imagine yourself living in that apartment.

I’m not suggesting that you make extravagant remarks that go over the top when looking at their apartment. But it’s a good idea when you’re in the bedroom to look at the space and say “I think I’ll put the bed up against this wall”. Or, maybe “I think the bureau would look good on this wall”.

Simple little statements about the apartment will help as well to sell you as a viable candidate to rent that apartment. If there is a lot of light in the kitchen, make a comment about the windows and how nice it would be to have a well-lit kitchen.

This shows the landlord that you like the apartment, you appreciate some of the benefits of that apartment, and that you will probably be a great tenant should he give you that apartment. A little flattery goes a long way to sell your self as a good prospect.

After all, if it is a really nice apartment then the landlord has done a lot of hard work to make it that way. I’m not suggesting you go over board and make a bunch of false statements. A landlord deals with people all day long and they will see through that. But if you see something nice in the apartment it would be a good idea and point it out and mention it. The idea is to sell your self to the landlord as someone who would respect the property and appreciate living in the apartment.
